AWRI 1503 gets Commendation at SITEVI Innovation Awards 2007 (Adapted from SITEVI commentary)
The new Maurivin AWRI 1503 hybrid yeast strain is the result of research work by the Australian Wine Research Institute into how to increase the diversity and aromatic intensity of wines and heighten the sensation of roundness on the palate and the concentration of fruit flavours.
It is the result of genetic hybridisation, crossing a commercial yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (AWRI 838, which has the same parentage as Maurivin PDM) with a non-Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain, using non-recombinant DNA techniques. This non-GMO hybrid yeast has useful oenological benefits such as improving a wine’s sensorial properties, greater stress resistance, increased fermentation control, higher fruit concentration, and better roundness.
It produces hardly any volatile acidity and has a modest nitrogen demand. It is ideal for enhancing a wine’s roundness and aromatic (fruit) complexity. As a whole, wines produced with this new strain have greater length on the palate and a higher fruit concentration.

| Monday, 28 August 2006 new to Maurivin: AWRI 1503 hybrid yeast
The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) has produced a new hybrid wine yeast strain using non-GMO techniques to increase flavour and aroma diversity in wine, as well as increasing palate intensity, mouth-feel and fruit concentration. This stable hybrid strain, AWRI 1503, was developed by mating a closely related Saccharomyces kudriavzevii yeast with AWRI 838, which has the same parentage as the efficient, reliable fermenter Maurivin PDM. For more information regarding this strain, click here. For sales and technical support, contact your nearest distributor.

Maurivin supports inaugural wine microbiology symposium
April 2006 saw the coming together of the world’s leading wine microbiologists, researchers and winemakers for the inaugural International Wine Microbiology Symposium, held at Yosemite California. Organisers of the event, Drs Roy Thornton and Susan Rodriguez, Professor Ken Fugelsang and Cynthia Wood of California State University (Fresno), hailed the successful event as a world-first.
Proudly sponsored by Maurivin, this symposium provided winemakers, technical and production staff the opportunity to hear the latest in wine yeast research from speakers from North & South America, Europe and Australia. Maurivin-sponsored presenters included key-note speaker Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute, who spoke about designing wine yeast strains for a market-directed wine industry, and Dr Vladimir Jiranek of the University of Adelaide, who talked about yeast nitrogen consumption.

| Monday, 20 March 2006 Taint compound not detected in Mauriferm products
A recent press release from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC) suggests that yeast ‘hulls’ and/or yeast ‘ghosts’ products may be implicated with taint compounds such as 2-chloro-6-methylphenol (commonly known as 6-chloro-o-cresol) in finished wines.
To be fully transparent with our customers we have sent samples of both Mauriferm Activator and Mauriferm Gold to the Australian Wine Research Institute for analytical testing. The results have demonstrated our products do not contain traces of these suggested taint compounds. Please CLICK HERE for the AWRI Industry Services report. A copy of this report is also available on our Technical Research page.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Anthony Heinrich at Mauri Yeast Australia on +61 2 9888 0208 or by email anthony.heinrich@abmauri.com.au.

Latest research unveils Maurivin yeast strains affect Shiraz aromas
AB Mauri in conjunction with the University of Western Sydney has conducted research to establish the aroma characteristics of each Maurivin red winemaking strain in Shiraz (Syrah) grape juice. BP 725 was seen to produce high levels of black pepper and spicy compounds, and it was also noted by the panel of expert judges that these wines had deep purple colour. Cellaring of these wines would result in a Shiraz of very high standards. AWRI 796 produced more ripe fruit characters, such as blackberry and plum aromas, which is indicative of this varietal red winemaking strain. The wines were also seen to have good mouth-feel with a medium palate length.
This is the first known report of a yeast strain affecting the release of black pepper aroma in Shiraz. Please CLICK HERE for an article explaining this research that appears in the October edition of the Australian trade magazine "Grapegrower and Winemaker".
